I was at a New Year’s Eve party this year when a passionate debate about submission broke out. I wanted to jump in and share my thoughts, since I’ve studied the topic and felt equipped to speak. But then, the Holy Spirit told me to be quiet and listen.
As I sat there, I realized the friends arguing against submission weren’t open to hearing a different perspective. They were fixated on their point, unwilling to have their minds or hearts changed.
How about you? In what ways are you holding firmly to your beliefs right now? The New Year often brings a sense of resolve, a time when we make resolutions based on what we think will help us become better. But the key is asking God what He wants for you, not just focusing on what we want.
For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him (Philippians 2:!3 NLT)
What my friends needed in that debate was to invite the Holy Spirit to reveal what submission looks like in their lives.
Friend, I urge you to do the same with the things you feel most resolute about. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you see, really see, what He intends for you. Don’t go into another year doing things your way. Allow Him to work in you and change your way to His. I pray that the eyes of your understanding will be enlightened (Ephesians 1:18) Don’t enter this year clinging to your own ideas. Let God transform your way to His.
Be blessed.
